How we got started
The idea for VegetarianBaby.com was born in late 1998, and
we hit the web in March of 1999. We started out promoting
Vegetarian Baby and Toddler, our print newsletter for the parents
of vegetarian and vegan children under three. Eventually,
we grew to include a large product line and expanded our
publication to include kids of all ages. We changed out name to Vegetarian Baby & Child and started printing in a
black and white magazine format and distributing our publication
all over the world! In April 2003, VBC merged with VegNews, and this website set out on its own to develop into an online publication. Melanie Wilson, editor/owner of this site, is the senior editor at VegNews but runs this site and Vegetarianteen.com Online Magazine separately, along with her business partner, Lucy Watkins.
Vegetarian Baby and Child's print magazine had subscribers all over the world, including Albania, Australia, Canada, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Isreal, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the U.K., the U.S., and the Virgin Islands before we stopped printing independently. Our readers expressed their desire to see the publication continue, so we switched to an online publication with a totally new look and design in October 2003.

Lucy Watkins, site manager, is a columnist for VegNews and co-editor of VegetarianTeen.com. She credits John Robbins groundbreaking book, Diet For A New America for her 1998 switch to vegetarianism and has since discovered the vital importance of support, communication, and unity within the vegetarian movement. She has been working for VBC since March of 2000. Lucy, her husband Barry, daughters Joy Lynn and Shirlee, Sadie the shephard mix, and Stripie the wonder cat live in a ranching community northeast of Dallas.
