New Orleans Playground is a collection of classic New Orleans favorites that demonstrate to children the complexity and variety of music from the Creole and Cajun cultures. The vibrant, colorful atmosphere of southern Louisiana is apparent in these lively tracks and the upbeat tunes appeal naturally to kids. New Orleans Playgroun is an enjoyable way to teach young children about New Orleans culture, unique musical instruments, and American music history.

Some of the songs introduce youngsters to musicians from an earlier generation with a focus on the 1920s and 1950s. Parents and grandparents will enjoy listening to Fats Domino and Chris Kenner with little ones. Despite the fact the music is fast and jazzy, it is still easy for young children to sing along. Children are bound to get hooked on the catchy lyrics and simple rhythms. Listening to this CD is a fun way for children to learn about American music, and the songs on New Orleans Playgroun, are authentic representations that kids of all ages can appreciate. Personally, I’ve enjoyed listening to New Orleans Playground for several nights in a row.

The songs are more adventurous than juvenile, with the innovative vocals on Clarence “Frogman” Henry’s “Ain’t Got No Home” and the smacking lips on Fats Domino’s “Whole Lotta Lovin.” In “Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner” listeners are treated to a wonderful performance by Kermit Ruffins with his daughters, Christina and Neshia. There is also a plucky blues version of “Row Row Your Boat” by Dr. John and the CD finishes with the timeless “When the Saints Go Marchin’ In,” a hallmark of New Orleans jazz parades.

By purchasing New Orleans Playground adults also have the opportunity to teach children about philanthropy and charitable giving. Sales from New Orleans Playground will be donated to the Louisiana Children’s Museum in support of a New Orleans music exhibit.
