Nursing pillows are a sweet thought. They conjure images of mother and baby, lovingly relaxing for a nursing session together, sitting comfortably on a couch: mother, baby and pillow. The pillow supports baby up around where they should be - at mother's breast.
When I was a new mom, I used Boppy nursing pillows. I had one on the couch, one in the bedroom, one at the LA-Z-Boy. I take that back - Boppies don't FIT into a LA-Z-Boy. They're too wide. But they're popular and there are reasons for that - they wrap around mom and they double as a support on the floor for tummy time or sitting time. However, Boppy was designed by a guy who doesn't have kids. That's reason enough for me not to buy another one. I want to support moms who design things for moms.
Here's another reality check about Boppies and other wrap-around nursing pillows. You can't kick or carry a Boppy to the other side of the room, at least not while holding baby and managing a preschooler (and doing the dishes and cleaning up spit-up).
That's where my Little Beam nursing pillow comes in. I can easily kick it across the floor to where I need it the most or get my preschooler to bring it to me since it's light. It's also small and very supportive and shaped like a boomerang so it just slightly fits around my waist.
When I first opened the delivery box, I thought, "Wow, they're not kidding. This is indeed a little nursing pillow. What good could this possibly do?" I discovered that it works really well. Like homeopathic medicine, I realized that the less pillow I have the better it works for me and baby. And it did.
From LittleBeam.com: "When placed on your lap, the LittleBeam will lift your baby, bringing her closer to you while you nurse. Having the pillow here will help you maintain proper posture while nursing." The Little Beam is very firm, which actually increases my feeling of connection with Colin. He stays in place instead of feeling like he's sinking away.
Little Beam nursing pillows come in six colorful fabric designs. Every purchase includes a free gift, like a nursing journal, breast pads or baby bottom spray. These pillows were designed by a mom and lactation consultant - who better to trust to help prop up my nursling?
